Will the counsellor keep my confidences?

By: Rhonda Fields, M. A., CCC

As soon as you have consented to the counselling process and the fees, the counsellor will review the guidelines to confidentiality and the limits to it. This should be spoken out loud and you must have the opportunity to ask any questions about confidentiality before you share your issues with the counsellor.

Aside from those identified limitations, the only ones with whom the counsellor may share a summary of your information are his or her psychologist supervisor, who is legally in charge of your counselling treatment, and any colleagues who sit in supervision with your counsellor.

If any of those colleagues know of you, they are ethically required to leave the room during the discussion of your issues. Your counselling file is kept safely locked for ten years followed by shredding and disposal. If your counselling fees are covered by an insurance company, certain employees have the right to specific information as to the purpose, goals, and progress made or not made from your therapy.
